The Problem
Faith communities struggle to stay spiritually connected in the digital age. Existing apps are either too complex, too commercial, or fail to create a genuine sense of belonging and accountability among believers. There was no dedicated space where someone could search scripture, share testimonies, ask for prayer, and feel genuinely supported — all in one place.
The Solution
SAFE is a faith-based Android application that creates a sanctuary in your pocket. It combines a powerful scripture search engine, daily devotional readings, a community testimony wall, and a live prayer-request system — all designed with a calming, purposeful UI that feels different from typical social apps.
My Role
I owned the full product lifecycle: concept, design, architecture, development, Firebase backend, and deployment. I also led the media strategy for the companion web platform and coordinated with the Parul Scripture Union community as first users.
Key Features
- Scripture Search — Full-text search across the entire Bible with highlighted results
- Community Help — Anonymous prayer requests broadcast to all users with real-time encouragement replies
- Testimony Wall — Users share answered prayers; admin-moderated for quality
- Push Notifications — FCM-powered alerts when someone responds to a prayer request
- Daily Readings — Curated devotional content delivered daily
- Offline Support — Core scripture content available without internet
- Admin Panel — Web dashboard for content moderation and community management
Architecture
SAFE uses a layered architecture: Flutter handles the presentation and state (Provider pattern), Firebase handles authentication and real-time sync (Firestore), and Cloud Functions handle server-side push notification delivery and content moderation triggers. The companion testimony website shares the same Firestore backend.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was designing the community help feature to feel safe and not exploitable. Anonymous posting is necessary for vulnerability, but required robust moderation. I solved this with admin-only deletion, soft-delete with audit trail, and FCM topic-based delivery so no user tokens are ever exposed to other users.
Outcome
Deployed to the Parul Scripture Union community of 200+ students. The community help feature saw immediate adoption, with users reporting that the ability to ask for prayer anonymously removed the social barrier to vulnerability. First Class feedback from initial users.
Lessons Learned
Designing for spiritual use taught me that UI restraint communicates trust. Every animation, colour, and sound choice had to feel calming rather than stimulating. This shaped how I think about emotional UX across all my work.
